T’is the season! Five ways to stay refreshed this holiday season

The pageant came to town. Black Friday reminded us of the consumer nature of the season… And now, even one of the world’s largest consumer brands – Maccas – has reminded us that even Santa needs a break sometimes. Take a look at their new advertisement from the UK:

So many of our clients are employers and managers – and if even the ‘big man’ can take a moment to refresh his zest for Christmas (and mitigate against his risk of leaving the wrong kid the wrong gift on Christmas Eve!)… so can you.

Here are five ideas for managers and owners to thrive through the holiday season:

  1. Pause. Don’t push through.

Many of us take breaks, but do we take the best kind? When we sneak in a bathroom break or eat at the desk, it negatively affects performance.  However, pausing throughout the workday, rather than pushing through, will improve well-being and – in opposition to the narrative of working long hours – makes us more productive at work and can deliver more for your bottom line.

Fatigue worsens over the workday, so what could these breaks look like?

  • Take lunch
  • Take a 3-5 minute meditation break
  • Look out the window and have a micro-break

2. Bring the outdoors in.

We know that exercise the physical activity can be a valuable reset.  Could you go for an outdoor walking meeting, rather than sitting at your desk? Take regular walking meetings to yield the benefits – it isn’t one-and-done.

3. Working from home? Take a few minutes with your furry friend.
Pets are linked to psychological wellbeing, so take time out with your furry friend if you have one. Just five minutes will build your relationship and encourage better mental health.

4. Fuel your mind.

Do a crossword puzzle, read a paper… or invest in some nice pens and a doodling/colouring in book.  Allocate yourself 5 minutes and take a microbreak that takes you away from the screen.  Social media is not a break. We can’t say that enough.

5. Fuel your body
Well, we’ve come full circle… We prefer some fruit, veggie sticks or half a cup of overnight oats with apples and berries. But, even the big guy needs to refuel!  Unhealthy snacks drain your energy, so even when you want to go for junk or candies – try to be thoughtful about your weekly menu. It keeps your energy up when you need it most.

Demonstrating best practice is a great example to set your team and shows great individual management of your risks.
