New Year’s Resolution: Putting people first (that includes you)

Making healthy choices. 

It doesn’t stop with fitness and diets – it’s time to set up your new mantra for the year: putting yourself and those around you first.

So this week (or next), it’s time to get your health and safety in shape:  What went well? What needs updating? What new strategies do you need to add to mitigate any risks and take care of your legal responsibilities?

Not sure where to start? Here are some practical questions you can ask yourself to improve your health and safety culture in 2024.

  1. Take stock of your September – December quarter.  What could you do better? What do you need to change? And how can you make sure that next year you’ve got the right controls in place so that you and your team aren’t crawling their way across the finish line next year?
  2. If there was stress and worry, it’s time to mitigate the risk. Nobody wants stress at work, and psychosocial risk isn’t a new thing. However, 2024 is the year psychosocial laws have been added to South Australia’s WHS laws.  It’s time to focus.
  3. Refresh your training.  Are your team ready to kick goals in 2024? Do they know how to do their job safely? Do they need refreshers since the last time they were trained, or do they need to learn new things because they’ve changed roles?  The new year is a great time to think about what your team need for the year ahead and also demonstrates that you’re putting safety first in the workplace – which demonstrates real leadership to your workers.
  4. Check your equipment inspection dates.  Make a list of any equipment that requires inspection and make sure it is done.  Remind the team to undertake an inspection of powerpoints, extinguishers, alarms.
  5. Revitalise your policy. Check your strategy – and refresh yourself on your annual plan. Review your policies and work practices annually to ensure you capture any changes to laws and regulations. It is important all policies and practices reflect the current environment.

Put your best foot forward for the new year and ensure your team will return home safe every day of 2024.
